The
Edwardian period immediately followed after the Victorian,
when Queen Victoria's long reign ended at the outset of the 20th
century and her son, King Edward VII, came to the throne in a
very brief reign which lasted a mere nine years from 1901 to 1910,
although the Edwardian period is often stretched to include the
years up to the outbreak of the First World War.

Typical
of the Edwardian period is understated plain oak furniture in
the Arts and Crafts style, which was very popular and frequently
stood alongside more traditional period styles. The Art Nouveau
style was also common, although it struggled to catch on in England
quite to the extent that it had in Europe. It was characterised
by sinuous undulating and interlacing plant forms often applied
to metal objects. In furniture, the wing chair was a typical and
popular shape with bamboo, wicker and bentwood furniture also
being introduced in this period, with examples by leading designers
like Ernest Gimson and Michael Thonet being much in demand, as
they are today.
Edwardian fireplaces and fascias were
fractionally smaller and less ostentatious than Victorian ones
with subtle minimalist lines and surface decorations. Edwardian
design lines tended to be generally sleeker and simpler than the
Victorian but still included a wide range of finials and decorations
and could still display opulence and elegance. Strong, simple
designs with classical motifs and a rediscovery of Tudor/Elizabethan
style became popular with open fires and large expanses of a more
geometric styled tiling. Wooden mantelpieces were still popular
as fire surrounds, which were often very tall incorporating mirrors.
Completely tiled insert fireplaces became common.
